PESCA studies how mutualistic ecological communities — such as plants and their pollinators — respond to environmental change, linking the patterns we observe in nature to the mechanisms that generate them, from individual pollinator behaviour to community-level dynamics. The project combines long-term field data with mathematical models and computer simulations.
The work revolves around four main questions:
How can we best measure the stability of an ecological community?
Does accounting for species interactions improve our ability to predict population dynamics?
How does pollinator behaviour shape the interaction networks they form with plants?
What rules or mechanisms explain the network structures we observe in nature?
The project is funded through the JAE-PRE program and the Emergia programme of the Junta de Andalucía, and is based at the Estación Biológica de Doñana.
